LGBTQIA2S+ History & Cultural Overview

Understanding LGBTQIA+ history is essential for clinicians who want to provide affirming, culturally responsive care, yet many providers receive little formal education on the events, identities, and social forces that have shaped the queer community.

This course explores major milestones in LGBTQIA+ history, including Stonewall, the removal of homosexuality from the DSM, marriage equality, the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and the Respect for Marriage Act, while also highlighting influential figures who helped shape the modern LGBTQIA+ movement.

We examine how stigma, discrimination, representation, changing language, and evolving understandings of sexuality continue to impact LGBTQIA+ individuals today, while helping clinicians build greater cultural competency and a stronger historical foundation for working with queer clients.
