Intersectionality and Development in the LGBTQIA+ Community

This course explores intersectionality and LGBTQIA+ identity development, including minority stress and resilience, gender identity, religion and spirituality, race and culture, bisexual and plurisexual identities, disability, socioeconomic status, and geography. Participants will examine how these intersecting identities can shape experiences of belonging, discrimination, sexuality, relationships, community, and access to affirming care.

We also examine the experiences of Black, Indigenous, Asian, Latinx, trans, nonbinary, bisexual, pansexual, plurisexual, and disabled LGBTQIA+ individuals while emphasizing that no community has one universal experience. Throughout the course, clinicians are encouraged to practice cultural humility, remain curious about each client's individual experience, and avoid making assumptions based on identity alone.
